This week we have some observations from our 1st Grade classes. We also harvested lots of rosemary, some cilantro, and parsley. During February we went to the garden with Mr. Kaleb. We talked about how we are learning the different seasons are changing from winter to spring. We observed our radishes that we planted in January, the leaves are starting to grow out of the ground. The leaves in the radishes are different from the leaves in the carrots. Room 4 planted beets and observed our onion crop.

This is the new flower bed at Walter Bracken with a bus on it that will soon be covered end to end with vines. The flower bed is located at the front of Walter Bracken. Mrs. Wheat fill’s class planted peas to make vines cover the bus. The radishes were planted around the perimeter of the bus. The class was put into two groups to plant. One group was planting radishes, and the other was planting peas. They had to put the radishes in the race car track (also known as the line of dirt outlined), and the peas randomly near or inside the bus. They had to make sure that the seeds were near the thin water lines or it will not have water and sadly die. The bus will have a shield of radishes surrounding it and soon the bus will be a vine bus.
By: Benjamin and Aiden In January room 5 observed the carrots growing in our beds. We noticed the leaves were getting longer. We also learned that carrots are root plants. Here are some interpretations of what farmer Caleb was teaching. He stated if we do not "seed save" we will run out of fruits and vegetables, and will not have anything to eat. Today in the garden, one group harvested, one group planted, a group that collected pinecones and old leaves, and another group that picked peppers. The kids who planted were planting kale. Roots were being pulled. The eggplant roots. The other planters planted radishes. The planters that were planting found two grubs in the garden. One big root spread seeds that fell in the holes of the dirt. Since the planters planted everything, they planted carrots. Also, grubs are bugs, I found out. So far the planters have planted carrots, beets, radishes, and kale. I can’t wait to see how they look when they grow.
Aliza Grade 4 Rm. 27 Blog for Room 11 Gardening Day -
It was a beautiful day to be in the garden! We planted beet and carrot seeds along two rows. Did you know that tomatoes can keep growing in colder weather? We were surprised to see lots of pretty yellow tomatoes to harvest! Can't wait to see the sprouts of carrots and beets soon. Room 4 observed the garden is being eaten by birds.
All the beets and half the radishes are nibbled down. Our class planted onion bulbs. We learned the roots go down and the "tail" or dried stem goes up. Here are some letters from a few students in Mrs. Swanson's class. Thanks for sharing! Here are some pictures we took for the Kindergarten Update! Room 4 observed today that Eggplant plants have purple stems, purple leaf veins, purple blossoms and the eggplant is purple.
