Today we had a lot going on, with plenty of classes in the garden. After talking to the kindergartners, Farmer Barbara tackled planting an ABC garden (Asparagus, which takes a long time to grow, Basil, which should be up sooner, and Corn, which we're already seeing a lot of maturity in (see picture)).
Meanwhile Farmer Kaleb led the first graders on more extensive exploration in observation. Kids had their clipboards out for drawing and observing the garden with every sense they could: sight, touch, and smell. Some observed that carrots and radishes weren't ready because we can't see their little colorful heads peeking up through the ground. Others observed the "hairy" vines of the tomato plants, as well as small green orbs that will hopefully turn into delicious ripe tomatoes soon.
Farmer Barbara told another class about micro-greens, or the tiny sprouts of carrots and radishes and such, that are edible as salad greens.
What we did:
-Planted an ABC garden
-Learned more through our powers of observation and senses
-Weeded and cleaned up the beds
What you can do:
-We saw one class cleaning up around their beds. Smart thinking!
-Keep an eye on those tiny buds to see when they'll be ripe.
Next time:
-We'll be getting ready to harvest and preparing for the heat
